Powell, Ohio is a popular suburb of Columbus located about 20 minutes north of metropolitan Columbus. Geographically, it is located next to the city of Dublin. The greater Powell area sits in southern Delaware County, the fastest growing county in Ohio and one of the fastest growing in the nation. Residents who call Powell home may live inside or outside the city limits, with those outside the limits being governed by Liberty Township. Collectively, the area has approximately 40,000 residents.
Many residents of Powell find an easy commute to their work around Columbus. Powell has easy access to the I-270 beltway and major arteries of State Route 315 and Sawmill Roads. The city encourages business development within the standards desired by residents of the community.
The greater Powell area has seen tremendous growth from its early days as a more rural community. Visitors can still find small farms dotted around the area, gently surrounded by attractive neighborhoods. Schools always play a very important role in the decision of where to live, whether or not a home buyer has school aged children. The greater Powell area is served by the public school district called Olentangy Local Schools (named for the nearby Olentangy River). It serves nearly 17,000 students in three high schools, five middle schools, and fifteen elementary schools, seven of which have preschool classrooms. Olentangy Local Schools have been ranked Excellent with Distinction (the highest possible rating) by the Ohio Department of Education for eight straight years. In addition to outstanding public schools, there are a wide variety of private school options in or near greater Powell.
Like Dublin, Powell offers many opportunites for golf enthusiasts. Wedgewood Golf and Country Club offers its members a 18 hole Robert Trent Jones, Jr. designed golf course. This beautiful mature course is located within the Wedgewood subdivision of approximately 450 homesites. Located along Sawmill Parkway is another golf community called Kinsale Golf and Fitness Club. When joining Kinsale, members also have the opportunity to belong to Scioto Reserve Country Club, located within the Scioto Reserve subdivision on Home Rd.
The opportunities to get out and about are endless in greater Powell. Many residents are members of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and Zoombezi Bay waterpark, and there are many activities at the Zoo throughout the year. The Columbus Zoo is rated the #1 Zoo in America. Everyone looks forward to enjoying family activities like the annual Powell Festival, the community bonfire, outdoor concerts and parades. Visitors will see people running and biking in the area, both on pathways and in the parks in the city of Powell and in the large Liberty Park on Home Rd. Greater Powell boasts 485 acres of park land, serving residents with skate parks, soccer fields, playgrounds, tennis courts, nature preserves, wetlands, and the popular splash pad. After the fun, find a restaurant among the area’s many choices spanning casual to upscale, burger joint to fine dining. Don’t forget to visit one of Powell’s numerous ice cream shops, including nationally known Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams. Shoppers will be delighted with historic downtown Powell’s quaint shops, boutiques and restaurants. Greater Powell is also located just a few minutes drive from one of the area’s largest shopping districts and mall, the Polaris Fashion Place.
